A new episode of NBC's 'Dateline' covers the disappearance of 36-year-old Mountain View resident Alice Ku, who disappeared while traveling in Taiwan in 2019 with her husband, Harald Herchen. Herchen, a prominent Silicon Valley engineer who owns several patents, was the prime suspect and managed to avoid trial in the US and extradition to Taiwan due to loopholes with his Canadian citizenship. The case remains unsolved six and a half years after Ku's disappearance. A Santa Clara Judge ruled in 2023 that Ku died in Taiwan's Taroko National Park while traveling with Herchen; Herchen was arrested at his Los Altos home and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. Last summer, a Santa Clara jury awarded more than $23 million to Ku's family in a wrongful death case.
