Big Tech is investing in next-gen nuclear technologies as it seeks to bolster electricity supply for power-hungry AI data centers. The deals offer nuclear companies both funding and a clearer path to making money. Several U.S. firms are developing new modular reactors that are smaller, more advanced and scalable than conventional nuclear plants. However, they have yet to begin commercial electricity production due to challenges such as financing constraints and first-hand-evaluation risks. These deals introduce tech giants' top-rated corporate balance sheets into a sector traditionally dependent on regulated utility rate bases. However the industry still faces challenges, including high construction and technology risks, and a looming skills shortage.
