The Denver Post has published a three-part series on the issue of drug education in Colorado, focusing on the growing awareness of substances like cannabis and psychedelics, which are now legal in the state. The series also includes a survey of 2023 high school students who currently drink alcohol and use drugs. 5280 Recovery High School in Denver serves about 100 teenagers who deal with substance abuse and addiction. The school uses strategies such as coaching and group meetings to help students stay sober, with an average of 440 days sober since its opening in 2018. However, approaches to drug education remain a patchwork across Colorado, with individual school districts being responsible for curriculum content. The survey also found that 20% of high schoolers currently use alcohol and tobacco, with a decrease from 23-6% in 2021.
