Minnesota leaders reassess César Chávez legacy after abuse allegations

Minnesota officials are reevaluating the legacy of late César Chávez, following new allegations of sexual abuse against him. The New York Times found extensive evidence that Cháved groomed multiple girls while leading the farmworkers movement. State lawmakers from both parties have proposed to repeal a state law that names Chacvez's birthday as "Cesar Chävez Day." The proposal is supported by Rep. Maria Pérez-Vegas (DFL-St. Paul), a spokesperson for House Republicans, and Gov. Tim Walz. The allegations have been met with support from the board of Academia Cesar Chavez, who described the allegations as "deeply troubling".
