The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) has agreed to use the state's Strategic Energy Investment Fund (SEIF) for a project costing $50 million. The funds were already allocated by the General Assembly through last year's budget process. The state will receive a rebate on its electric bills for the duration of the projects. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with state officials not yet identifying the 25 potential sites. The SEIF is used by utility companies that cannot meet state requirements for purchasing renewable energy, causing the fund to balloon. Governor Wes Moore plans to use about $725 million from the fund for climate-related programs, including a one-time electric bill refund and a program to finance solar energy projects to compensate for lost federal tax credits.
