The third season of The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments, created by Bruce Miller, has revealed that Lydia Clements, the other Gilead-aligned woman in the series, was introduced as a fervently religious ideologue who helped instill a revolution that she hoped would make America godly again and provide a means for her to have a baby she desperately craved. However, she was blindsided by the cruelty of her male co-conspirators' brand of patriarchy. The episode titled "Stadium" reveals that Lydia was an elementary school teacher and before being a family lawyer who adores kids and was reported to Child Protective Services on the grounds of food insecurity and promiscuity. She then becomes a surrogate aunt to the family, reporting them to Child Protection Services on food insecurity, and eventually turning on the mother, Vivian, or Aunt Vidala. The show's portrayal of Lydia contrasts with her former life with her portrayal of an unnamed unnamed character who used her proximity to powerful men to control women she perceived as sexually desirable than herself.
