Texas' water future is in dire straitit, with a draft for the 2027 State Water Plan more than doubling the projected water needs for the state over five decades. This means the cost to prevent severe water shortages over the next five decades is $174 billion. However, increasing the allocation for the Texas Water Fund is not the solution, but instead focusing on strategic investments to ensure projects are completed on time. The state also expanded the Texas water Fund Advisory Committee to provide additional oversight to the Texas Department of Water Development Board, which manages the water fund. The focus should be on projects that expand water resilience in areas affected by extreme drought and where high economic growth is expected.
