The Senate has advanced the nomination of Republican Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin to be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by 54-37. This decision was unexpected as one Democrat, Democrat John Fetterman, considered Mullin a friend and had a constructive working relationship with the White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. Heinrich also expressed his desire for a Secretary who would not "take their orders from Stephen Miller". The final confirmation vote is expected on Monday or Tuesday. Mullin, an enrolled member of the Cherokee nation, is the only American Indian member in the Senate since Ben Nighthorse Campbell retired in 2005.
