Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has defended drug trafficking suspects, placing her political party over justice and drug cartels. This follows allegations that the Sinaloa’s governor, Rubén Rocha Moya, and seven other current and former Mexican officials conspired to import massive quantities of drugs into the US in exchange for political support and bribes. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the Drug Enforcement Administration have announced charges against Rchea, Sen. Enrique Inzunza, Culiacán Mayor Juan de Dios Gámez and seven others. The Mexican government has also stated that it intends to investigate 50 individuals who participated in an anti-drug operation supported by the CIA in Chihuahua.
