House Republicans Pass New Hampshire School District Budget Cap

The New Hampshire House has approved a bill that requires school districts to vote on a spending cap every two years. The bill, House Bill 1300, would place a cap on property taxes raised for a school district's budget and a fixed cap on central office administrative spending. The proposal would appear on the ballot during the November general election and remain in place for the following two years, according to House Republicans. Critics argue that the bill fails to account rising costs like rising utility bills, health care costs and special-education services. The National Education Association also supports the bill, arguing that lawmakers need to meet their constitutional obligation to fund an adequate education before passing spending caps. The House also approved House Bill 1817, which would allow students in the Education Freedom Account program to attend their own district school if they are in the EFA program.
