Brown University President Christina Paxson will step down at the end of the academic year, following a 15-year tenure that saw her overseeing negotiations with the Trump administration. She started her tenure in 2012 and will be replaced by Christopher Eisgruber, the president of Princeton University since 2013. Paxson had a contentious relationship with the administration, which halted over $500 million in federal research funding in 2025 and launched probes into Brown's compliance with antidiscrimination laws. In July, Brown reached a deal with the government to end the investigations and restore the funding. However, she also criticized a proposed compact that would require universities to change campus policies in exchange for federal funds, which she argued would restrict academic freedom.
