The Artemis II mission, led by Orion spacecraft Integrity, has officially broken the record of 400,171 kilometers (248,655 miles) from Earth, breaking the previous record set by Apollo 13 in 1970. The mission reached its maximum distance from Earth at 23:02 UTC on 6 April 2026, reaching 406,771 kilometers as it traveled beyond the far side of the Moon, 6,616 kilometers past the Apollo 13 record. This milestone is part of the Artemis program, which is also a critical test of the systems that will carry and sustain astronauts along the journey. The crew has faced numerous challenges, including navigation issues, and a new image of Earth, "Hello, World", captured by Reid Wiseman as the spacecraft moved away from the planet on April 3, following a translunar injection burn.
