Government imposters is top scam reported in Cuyahoga County

Scammers stole over $5.2 million from Cuyahoga County residents in 2025, according to reports from the County’s Department of Consumer Affairs. The most common type of scam was government imposters, followed by fraudulent state texts demanding money for turnpike tolls or unpaid traffic tickets. Other scams included fraudulent company imposter claims, fraudulent bank transfers, and scam pop-up alerts warning of computer viruses. The department's director, Sheryl Harris, reminded residents that law enforcement will not directly contact them for payments. The scam is part of National Consumer Protection Week.
