Detroit to get innovative in goal for new-build housing

Detroit is seeking innovative strategies to build housing on its vacant land, with Mayor Mary Sheffield aiming for 1,000 homes built in four years. The city's housing director, Julie Schneider, stated that costs and timelines need to decrease for this to be feasible. The administration plans to use $550,000 in federal funding to study and develop innovative solutions. A federal housing grant will also support "infill housing" on vacant land and update city zoning rules to encourage more affordable housing construction. One of the key ideas is 3D-printed houses, which has been lauded by non-profit Citizen Robotics as an early step in homebuilding.
