U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan visited the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Burlington for the first time since President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown ramped up last year. This visit was prearranged with ICE and lasted about an hour and a half. Trahan expressed her commitment to pushing for ICE to face accountability for its actions, but did not report continued poor conditions for detainees inside. She also highlighted the increased funding given to ICE as a result of the increased focus on targeting and detaining hard-working people without a criminal record. This comes amid a partial government shutdown affecting several federal agencies, including ICE and the Transportation Safety Administration. Trahen's visit came amid a transition in DHS, with former Homeland Security Secretary Kristiememetso being confirmed as No. 1.
