Student political groups at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have responded to a rise in political violence, with one suspect, Cole Allen, attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. This makes it the third assassination attempt against Trump in two years, along with the killing of political activist Charlie Kirk and two Minnesota lawmakers. Nicklas Stefanik, the secretary of UNL College Republicans, believes the rise in violence is partly due to social media, which he attributes to the increase in online rhetoric. Both groups have been proactive in promoting respectful debates and forming relationships with different political ideologies.
