President Trump is seeking to end temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitians and Syrians, who have been living in the U.S. legally for over a decade. The TPS program allows eligible individuals to live and work in the United States if they cannot return home due to natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other "extraordinary or temporary conditions." Since 1990, every president has embraced the program, except Trump. The status was extended to individuals from Haiti, where a devastating earthquake killed over 300,000 people in 2010, and Syria, where an estimated 7,000 individuals have been granted TPS. The Trump administration argues that the 1990 TPS statute does not subject to review by the courts. However, the court has been traditionally deferential to executive branch claims in the area of "national immigration".
