United Airlines is preparing for a fare storm, raising checked bag fees, cutting approximately 5% of its planned spring and summer flights, and introducing a new tiered fare structure across its premium cabins. The airline's CEO, Scott Kirby, explained that jet fuel prices have nearly doubled since the Iran war began and could cost the airline an additional $11B in annual expense just for jet fuel. United also announced a three-tier fare structure for its Polaris business-class and Premium Plus premium-economy cabins, which could cost customers more for fewer perks. The new pricing model includes a lie-flat seat in Polaris but removes advance seat selection, limits luggage choices, and restricts lounge access to the United Club rather than the higher-end Polaris lounge.
