Manuel Gómez Pereira's "The Dinner" (La cena), set in 1939, follows a group of defeated Republican chefs who are ordered to prepare a banquet for Franco and his top generals at Madrid's Palace Hotel. The film combines a period backdrop, tension, and a tone that shifts between suspense and comedy. Released by A Contracorriente Films on Oct. 17, it has grossed €3.7 million ($4.3 million) and attracted over 600,000 admissions. At the 2026 Goya Awards, it won two awards, including best picture. The director, GóMez Pereria, is a longstanding Spanish commercial cinema presence and has previously directed films such as "All Men Are the Same" and "Mouth to Mouth".
