Tennessee Republicans' plan would push Metro elections by a year

State Republicans are proposing a plan to force local governments to schedule their elections in evennumbered years to coincide with presidential or gubernatorial cycles. The proposal, from state Rep. Scott Cepicky and Sen. Joe Hensley, could result in more political turmoil in Nashville. If adopted, the current terms of Mayor Freddie O'Connell and Metro Council members would reportedly extend until 2028 instead of 2027. The plan would increase voter turnout and reduce the cost of holding off-cycle elections.
