Regional carrier Air Calédonie, a French regional carrier, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in response to a series of challenges that led to its bankruptcy on March 27. The airline, which provides vital services to residents of the overseas French territory of New Caledonia, was unable to resume flights due to ongoing protests over plans to relocate its base from the capital city of Nouméa to a smaller airport over 50 miles away due to protests that blocked airfields for weeks. To avoid collapse, the airline requested restructuring assistance from a local bankruptcy court, which has now taken on the restructuring process, including freezing its existing debts until April 14. Public Prosecutor Yves Dupas has framed the receivership as a "last chance" to save the company, which was established in 1954.
