Why Iranian-Americans are cheering the war — and thanking Trump

Iranian-Americans in California have celebrated the war with Iran, largely in celebration and thanking President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. California's Iranian diaspora, which includes roughly 500,000 Iranians and half of the entire U.S. population, began to take root in 1979 due to the Islamic Republic's oppression. The community believes that a secular, democratic transition to Iran is their best chance at a smooth transition. The political alignment reflects years of disillusionment with Democratic administrations that pursued nuclear diplomacy with a criminal regime. The alliance between Trump and Netanyahu reads to this community as the correct strategic alignment against a shared adversary. However, there are concerns about a prolonged conflict or a decapitated regime that leaves remnants behind, many in the community believe it is not a stable or acceptable alternative.
