The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has issued an urgent warning about the threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI) being used to hack bank accounts. The warning came after an emergency meeting with the CEOs of major Wall Street banks in April, prompted by concerns about a new AI model from Anthropic that could identify thousands of software vulnerabilities across major operating systems and browsers. The model has demonstrated its capability to exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities across all major operating system and browsers, currently restricted to select authorized companies, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Apple. The Treasury has been building its AI cybersecurity infrastructure since February and is releasing a series of resources designed to enable secure and resilient AI deployment across the U.S. financial system.
