The Great Salt Lake, a vital water supply for Utah, is experiencing a period of low snowpack, leading to a weak runoff year for the lake. Efforts to address the lake's decline have been fragmented, with conservation groups, farmers, businesses, researchers and policymakers often working towards similar goals. However, this lack of coordination has led to the creation of the Great Salt Salt Lake Alliance. The Alliance brings together leaders from agriculture, business, conservation, research, and government around a shared mission to restore the lake, which contributes nearly $2 billion annually to Utah’s economy and provides critical habitat for millions of migratory birds. Despite this, many of the right pieces are already in place, including voluntary conservation programs, tiered pricing, updated landscaping ordinances, and public education campaigns.
