New report projects downtown KC population boom

A report by the Downtown Council predicts that Kansas City's downtown population will grow by approximately 33% over the next decade, with an influx of nearly 11,000 new residents. This comes as city leaders struggle to balance affordability with developer incentives. The report, which used data from Esri Business Analyst, predicts that 44,000 residents by 2035, is almost 1,100 additional residents per year. The city has an affordable housing shortage of 68,000 homes, despite luxury towers receiving city tax incentives and increasing rents. An investigation by the Kansas City Business Journal found that this policy had not directly contributed to affordable housing.
