Research into a Neolithic settlement in Motza, Israel, has revealed that the earliest known use of dolomitic lime plaster, predates the better-known Roman plaster by 8,000 years. The discovery led to a rewrite of the technological history of kilns and plaster creation. The ancient inhabitants of Motza had separate kilns for dolmite lime and calcite lime, indicating a true understanding of their differing properties. Dolomitic plaster, a stronger and more water-resistant plaster than typical calcitic plaster and is traditionally credited to the Romans, was discovered in a study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science. The high-quality high-profile dolodomite plaster is rare in the archaeological record due to its difficulty in producing it.
