One of the leading weather forecast models predicts a 62 percent chance of a strong El Niño developing in the summer, while others predict a moderate El Niño occurring in late summer or fall. This could trigger severe winter storms, flooding, and coastal erosion in California. The name El Niño has become synonymous with extreme weather over the past two decades. Scientists are already seeing elevated surface sea water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, indicating that El Niño conditions are building. Both Northern and Southern California are already experiencing unusually hot weather, which could break records between Thursday and Tuesday. However, the National Weather Service has not issued any fire weather alerts yet. Fire officials advise residents to reduce wildfire danger by creating 100 feet of defensible space around homes by clearing dry vegetation and debris.
