Guest column: Illinoisans can’t keep paying the price for unchecked car insurance rates

The Driving Change legislation, part of Senate Bill 1486, aims to move Illinois towards a fairer, more affordable system that prioritizes a driver’s record behind the wheel. The legislation includes accountability for the insurance market, giving the Illinois Department of Insurance authority to review rates, challenge them, and force insurance companies to issue rebuff consumers when they've been overcharged. It also includes a measure that allows consumers to receive at least 60 days’ notice before any rate hike of more than 10% takes effect. However, the insurance industry has opposed these efforts, opposing another study funded by the industry that criticizes these reforms. The cost of owning a vehicle is high enough, and it's time for drivers to put drivers in the driving seat.
