The Steep Human Cost of Meta's Ambitious AI Expansion

Mark Zuckerberg's company, Meta, is reportedly planning to cut 20 percent of its workforce by one fifth of its employees as part of a $600 million plan to expand its AI infrastructure. The layoffs would be the largest since the previous year when Facebook's parent company cut 13% of its payroll, resulting in the elimination of 11,000 jobs. The company claims to employ 79,000 workers by 2025 and plans to invest $600 billion in data centers.
