Published on April 12, 2026.
Fellow Democrats are abandoning Eric Swalwell's campaign for California governor amid allegations that he sexually assaulted a former staffer. The allegations surfaced after he became a leading contender in the race to replace outgoing Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. Some Democrats in Congress have called for his resignation from the House and for the rare step of expelling him if he does not resign. California Reps. Jared Huffman, Ro Khanna, and Sam Liccardo have also called for Swalwoll to resign. The accusations have been met with support from Sen. Adam Schiff and powerful labor unions, who have also withdrawn their endorsements. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the alleged assault occurred in 2019 and 2024. The woman said she did not report the assaults to police due to fears of being believed.
