Supreme Court sides with Escondido teachers in ongoing lawsuit over transgender student privacy, parents’ rights

The US Supreme Court reinstated a federal judge's ruling that California teachers must be allowed to tell parents if their child may be transgender, a decision supported by parents who argue they have a constitutional right to know about such changes. The court argued that California's policies let schools conceal changes to a student's gender presentation from their parents, interfere with parents' rights to guide their children's religious upbringing. The case, Mirabelli v. Olson, is still under review at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. California does not require school employees to withhold information about student’s gender presentation, but AB 1955 only prohibits schools from requiring teachers and staff to notify parents about changes.
