The St. Louis County Board is seeking $1.7 million from the state to protect 300 feet of Scandia Cemetery's waterfront from erosion. The county, likely with help from the city, would pay for 25% of the $2.3 million project. The site, one of Duluth's oldest cemeteries, has been exposed due to years of erosion and waves tugging at the earth to reveal what lies beneath it. The St Louis County has hired local architecture and engineering firm LHB for design concepts to mitigate further deterioration. The preferred fix is a concrete wall, but the impact from lake movement still needs to be examined. If the cemetery is abandoned, it would be an eyesore for the county in this public location.
