The 25th Amendment, passed in 1967, allows the Vice President and majority of Congress to assume the presidency if the President is unable to discharge his duties and responsibilities. This is an alternative to impeachment, as President Donald Trump has been accused of starting a major war in the Middle East without consulting Congress and creating Trump-branded cryptocurrencies and selling access to his administration at Mar-a-Lago pay-to-play events. He has also violated the First Amendment to the United States Constitution by politicizing the Department of Justice and defying court orders. However, during his first term in office, lawmakers twice impeached him for equal or greater crimes than he has committed during his second term. The amendment allows for the resignation of the President if Congress votes to remove him from office.
