Kilauea District Park facilities will remain under city ownership, management and operation following a land transfer to the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) from the state, which transfers ownership of certain public-school lands to the HIDOE, including land that includes Kaimuki Middle School and adjacent park facilities. Concerns were raised earlier this year about the transfer, which could potentially void city permits for the park's recreation center and impact kupuna and keiki programs. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the HIDSOE and the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), allowing existing recreational uses and community programming to continue. The city has allocated $400,000 to begin improvements to the gymnasium roof.
