Trump is trying to build a massive voter database. Election officials are afraid of what he’ll do with it

The US President is increasing his campaign against alleged voter fraud, taking new steps towards building a national citizen database and increasing its hunt for suspected noncitizen voters. The Justice Department has signed a deal with the Department of Homeland Security to provide DHS sensitive voter-roll data demanded from states to be checked against a citizenship verification program criticized for its inaccuracies. Critics fear this could use this data to block eligible Americans from voting and raise doubts about the legitimacy of the 2026 midterm elections. The administration has also sued 30 states and the District of Columbia for withholding their voter lists voluntarily. The move comes as Republicans continue to push for unilateral changes to the Senate filibuster rules to prevent elections changes.
