A reader writes to Eric Kohn about his oldest friend, Dee, who has a daughter, Angie, 18, who recently moved in with her aunt and uncle due to a disagreement between Dee and Angie. Dee is angry that Angie is not doing her laundry on time, cleaning her room, cleaning the bed, and refusing to talk to her. Dee has confided to her friends that she takes her daughter's phone away and checks her daughter’s phone in detail for texts, emails, social media posts, anything to catch her doing something wrong. Some of Dee's actions could be considered emotionally abusive towards Angie and may require a tough conversation about her actions. Kohn suggests that speaking out to your friends about the situation is a good idea, but speaking out will help your internal process.
