Canada may use retired police officers to seize firearms from gun owners during a door-to-door confiscation, according to a senior official from the country's Parliament. This follows the implementation of legislation introduced by then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to freeze handgun purchases and a "buy-back" of military-style semi-automatic firearms in May 2022. Conservative Member of Parliament Dane Lloyd of Alberta questioned Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree about the apparent large-scale refusal to comply with gun owners. Ananandashenaree responded that the RCMP and other agencies will be available throughout spring and summer to collect firearms. The move is seen as a move towards mass confiscation of firearms in response to a December 2025 terrorist attack inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
