RFK Jr. to revamp influential preventive services panel

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is seeking to revamp the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a powerful but little-known task force that determines what preventive medical services insurers must cover for free. The Department of Health and Human Services has issued a call for nominations to the 16-person panel, which Kennedy has criticized for being lackadaisical and negligent for 20 years. The task force, composed of medical experts, reviews scientific evidence to make recommendations on services such as cancer screenings, HIV prevention medications and more. Despite concerns from public health experts and advocates that Kennedy might fire the task force and appoint members ideologically aligned with himself, the Supreme Court recently ruled that Kennedy has the power to hire and dismiss panelists at will.
