Empowering Baltimore’s IG would restore trust to city government

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott's administration has maintained that Inspector General Isabel Mercedes Cumming's requests for information requests for such information are illegal and should be dismissed. Baltimore Councilman Mark Conway has proposed legislation allowing the IG to serve as a co-custodian of records, allowing Cumming to access records for her job. This would allow her to root out waste and restore accountability to city government. The Taxpayers Protection Alliance has supported the proposal, calling for a change to Baltimore's charter to protect the IG's access to information. In January, Scott cut off the IG’s access to city files crucial to Cumming’�s investigations into fraud, claiming that access had been removed.
