The House of Representatives has approved a short-term extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, following a series of embarrassing floor defeats on a longer-term reauthorization. The House rejected the substance of the deal and blocked a procedural vote to advance an 18-month clean extension. The extension now goes to the Senate for approval. The program is set to expire in three days. Despite efforts by Republican leaders and the White House to secure a clean extension, the House's privacy hawks were not swayed by the deal.
