Judge rejects Charlie Javice’s bid to toss fraud conviction after law clerks’ conflicts of interest claim

A federal judge has rejected a bid by Charlie Javice to overturn her conviction for defrauding JPMorgan Chase into buying her education startup, Frank, for $175 million. She claimed that two law clerks had conflicts of interest by accepting jobs at the bank's outside law firm, Davis Polk & Wardwell. However, US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein stated that these positions did not create an appearance of partiality and that there was no proof that he relied too heavily on his clerks. Both Javice and co-defendant Olivier Amar were convicted in March of bank fraud, securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud.
