A new study has identified a neutron star merger within a tiny galaxy, which was found within part of a giant stream of gas and dust. The explosion, dubbed GRB 230906A, was spotted by the Earth-orbiting Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and is likely to originate from two neutron stars. The researchers believe this discovery could help resolve two major astrophysics questions. The discovery also revealed a new gamma-ray burst (GRB), one of the universe's most powerful and luminous types of explosions, could be coming from around 4.7 billion light-years away. This discovery could shed light on why astronomers and platinum, as well as other heavy metals, were not detected outside big galaxies.
