Gov. Tina Kotek of Oregon has signed eight bills aimed at protecting immigrants in response to the Trump administration's unprecedented enforcement actions. The bills, passed in a short legislative session, address community concerns about federal officers confronting residents at their homes, on their way to work, and even at hospitals without warrants. They include bills that restrict federal agents and other law enforcement officers from wearing masks, allow people to sue federal agents for entering private property without a judicial warrant, require public schools to alert staff and parents when immigration authorities are on school property, and establish boundaries for hospitals to share information related to immigration status of patients. Kotek was the speaker of the Oregon House during President Donald Trump's first administration and fought to protect Oregon’s environmental laws and access to health care.
