Alaska's child abuse rate has dropped almost 30% since 2020, but remains above the national rate, according to a federal report. The annual “Child Maltreatment 2024’s report, released in 2025, shows that the state recorded a victimization rate of 13 victims per 1,000 children in federal fiscal year 2024, compared to the national average of 7.2 per1,000. In Alaska, 2,266 children were identified as victims of abuse or neglect in 2024, a 29.5% decrease from 2020. However, state officials, advocates and survivors have cautioned that the drop in recorded numbers does not necessarily mean fewer children are being harmed. The report's release comes as April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, when agencies highlight prevention programs and ways communities can support families.
