Memphis man, Richard Carpenter, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017 and has since used his story to raise awareness and help save lives. According to the American Cancer Society, about one in eight men will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime, more likely to develop in men who are 65 or older, and the risk is higher in Black men. Carpenter and his wife, Dr. Terrell Carpenter, own Carpenter Primary Healthcare in Whitehaven, founded the Prostate Education Awareness Council to promote more awareness about prostate cancer and encourage men to get tested. The Carpenters also hosted an event at the Bert Ferguson Community Center for men 40 and older to receive free PSA and testosterone screenings.
