Legislature's move makes bold Rio Grande Depot plan 'more complicated'

The Utah Legislature has approved a plan to restore the historic Rio Grande Depot to the University of Utah, burying rail lines that divide Salt Lake City and building on the west side of downtown. However, a citizen activist, Christian Lenhart, expressed concern over the process being conducted without public comment and without public notice. Lenhart has been promoting the project, which includes a new train corridor underneath 500 West, restoring the depot to its transportation hub, and redevelopment where trains now roll a block west of the depot. Governor Cox and Mayor Mendenhall have both expressed support for the vision, while a cost estimate could be higher than $3-8 billion.
