A Study Proves Stoplights Need a Fourth Color: White

A study by North Carolina State University has found that a fourth "white light" could be added to stoplights to allow autonomous vehicles (AVs) to leverage their networking capability. This light would alert human drivers to follow the car in front and potentially decrease traffic delays significantly. The researchers tested this system using microscopic traffic simulators and found that when the percentage of AVs at an intersection was low, the “white light” signals to human drivers that their robo-motorists have assumed control. The light does not need to be white and can be any color. However, the researchers suggest that pilot programs could begin in a more controlled environment like ports where commercial vehicles are more likely to be AVs.
