The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a new lawsuit against California to prevent the state from implementing a law that could end gasoline-powered car sales in California by 2035. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to block what it calls an "Illegal EV Mandate" which could result in increased car prices across the country. The state's Advanced Clean Cars (ACC II) law, approved by the California Air Resources Board in 2022, aims to have 35% of all cars sold in the state be zero-emission vehicles by 2026, with a goal of 100% by 20 35. The Trump administration has also labelled California's actions as "regulatory overreach," claiming the state lacks the authority to enforce such an EV mandate.
