Theory registered dietitian nutritionist and clinical operations lead at WellTheory, Kacey Morrow, has identified six foods with hidden health benefits, including potatoes, which have been criticized due to their high carbohydrate content and high glycemic index, which can easily spike blood sugar. She also defended potatoes as “surprisingly nutrient-dense” and said they contain more potassium than a banana, along with vitamin C and fiber, and can help with appetite control when prepared simply, like baked or roasted, instead of fried. Other foods deemed “healthy” include fruits, vegetables, and fish that provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, high-calorie, ultra-processed foods can increase the risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and premature death. These foods are often criticized for their high sugar and fat content, but also contain beneficial nutrients like vitamin B12 and probiotics that can support gut health. Pasta can be added to a balanced, satisfying meal when combined with protein and vegetables. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which is said to offer heart-healthy benefits like reduced inflammation and improved blood flow.
