Scammers impersonating Amazon are sending fake text alerts about product recalls, which consumers can respond to with a refund request. The scam, which usually involves a false claim that the order purchased from Amazon is being recalled for'safety review', is likely to be a hot one in 2026. Amazon acknowledged that it had seen an increase in these alerts and is taking action against refund fraud groups in the US and UK. The AARP fraud alert on recall scams noted that the fake text message might say: “To ensure your safety and process your full refund without delay, please sign into your account through the official website and review your order below” The link connects you to the con artists, but it does not connect you to an official site. Amazon encourages consumers to report suspected scams at amazon/reportascam and refer bad actors to law enforcement.
